Obituary
In loving memory of James “Jim” Randall Porter, who passed away on December 13th, 2023, in the San Bernardino National Forest. Jim’s spirit and love for nature left a mark on all fortunate enough to know him.
Jim Porter entered the world on August 9th, 1976, in Los Angeles, embracing an active and adventurous lifestyle from a very young age. He had a passion for football and followed the Florida State Seminoles, watching several of their victories. He also loved the Dodgers and Lakers.
After graduating from Ventura High School, Jim pursued his interest in Marine Biology at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). Jim’s professional journey spanned 25 years at the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department as a Correctional Officer, where he made a lasting impact.
A seasoned fisherman in his earlier days, he transitioned seamlessly into capturing the breathtaking beauty of the outdoors through photography. This passion evolved into a fearless pursuit of mountaineering, boasting an awe-inspiring record of over 400 summits across 200+ peaks. Mount Whitney, ascended 43 times, held a special place in his heart.
A social butterfly, Jim’s warm kindness endeared him to many in both his professional and outdoor communities. Whether on the trail or at work, he had a knack for striking up meaningful conversations, leaving a lasting impression on those he encountered. A firm believer in God, his faith was a guiding light throughout his life.
Jim is survived by his wife Stephanie, daughter Jackie, mother Elaine, and siblings Nolan and Jennifer, as well as his feline companions Ozzy and George. Though Jim’s physical presence is no longer with us, his legacy of resilience, passion for exploration, and love for the great outdoors will forever echo in our hearts, ensuring he is never forgotten. May he rest in eternal peace.
